The drying and imbibition cells coring workshop

This is the main workshop in the Physical Measurements Center. Here, the rock slabs are dried using hot-air drying techniques. The job is then finalized using a vacuum cell.

Once the slabs are fully dried, their porosity system is completely flooded with either mineral water or brines using the same vacuum cell.


The coring workshop assures several functions:

  • Cut 100-mm central cores for geosciences analyses.
  • Bore the initial hole to the ultimate hole diameter (up to 300mm) whilst ensuring a high-quality borehole surface and a perfect verticality between the slab and the central hole .

A modified radial drill with an adjustable tilt table is set up in the workshop to ensure both tasks.
